At JEA we filmed many interviews and a lot of B-Roll from around the convention and San Antonio. Now, I am putting together a video featuring key JEA staffers and students from the convention for Ladue View. Hopefully it will be done soon, and be a good addition to the show.

Our broadcast class leaves for San Antonio tonight, we're ready to take on this adventure! JEA, here we come! (with loads of equipment, story ideas, and excitement)

So, it's November. Wow. I can't believe it. The time has flown by since the beginning of the semester, and has been filled with complete craziness. But good craziness. Here's what I've been up to.

I started this year making a video for Link Crew, which focused on a star Ac Lab so that other Link Leaders could learn from the pros. Hopefully it was helpful to some.

Next I made a commentary on the election. The idea of it was to convince young people to pay attention to the election. The lighting proved difficult, but my main focus on that video was the writing.

After that, I made both a video on education and the common core standards, and a video on creativity in journalism. The first will be a part of a C-SPAN project that I am creating, and the second was for the conference in San Antonio that our class will be attending, JEA.

As the year progresses, I am working on a special bullying video, and finishing my C-SPAN project. It's a busy year!

Dear Teacher,

I have created a project for the Educational Essay you assigned first semester, and I feel that it really embodies the idea of the assignment and allowed me to be creative in my work as well. I have made a video that talks about the teacher-student communication in a light-hearted manner.  I worked hard to make it personal, though, by including myself in the beginning and end and making the tone of the video similar to my personality. I truly feel that this is a very valid completion of the assignment, and I would encourage you to allow future students to embark on a similar challenge to create a video for this assignment. I have learned about education from a different perspective, something that is very valuable to me.

Thank you,
Samantha

So the final day has approached, and I am finished with my video. I believe it turned out very nice, but I want to explain the reasoning behind it.

The project I choice to "re-do" was a personal essay in AP Lang that broadly focused on any educational experience or observation. Students were to write a two paged essay that conveyed these thoughts. (Real rubric is attached below).

For this project, I thought of an entertaining aspect of the educational system, and tried to put a unique spin on it to make it creative, and personal to me. I wanted to examine the teacher-student relationship in a light hearted way, because I believe that that relationship is pivotal to a successful learning environment. It was important to me that there was some lightheartedness seen by viewers as well, as I wanted to emulate some of my personality in the project, because the essay is a "personal" essay.

Thank you to all the teachers who participated, especially the extremely funny and excellent on-camera talent Mrs. D.

Stuff Students Say

Our final this year is to create a video that we did a non-video assignment for in another class this year. I'm doing a hopefully humorous video about education for the open ended education essay we wrote in AP Lang first semester. Should be interesting... :)

A few months back, Ladue newspaper writer Chloe An wrote a wonderful piece on the school, and the country's inability to keep promises. I've always loved branching into the newspaper part of our school's journalism programs because in the real world, written stories go along with videos. This was a great opportunity for me to turn the written word into a witty, humorous, and hopefully thought provoking video. Hope you enjoy.

Along with Leo Dicera, I created a video to advertise the Ladue Prom. We used the white back-drop in our studio and HD cameras to film. Our talent was superb. With Leo's guidance and help, we created a very cool video that we are very proud of. It was a long process, but all good things take time.
Here it is!
Prom Video

This month has been crazy, yet again, between  going to the Midwest Education and Technology Conference (and trying to help where I could), working with Gateway Tech High School and KSDK on an "I'm just sayin'!" and trying to pull the prom commercial together. I have to say, along with Leo Dicera who I have been collaborating with on the commercial, we seem to have pioneered ways to create content using the studio and final cut pro. And it looks really cool. I'm really excited for the school to see it-- I hope they like it. I think it will be a big surprise...

Other than that, I pulled together a little video (AP style) for Junior Courtney Jonas (my very good friend) and her win at the area poetry competition. Way to go Court! That video will be posted shortly.

It's been quite a month (probably because we had one extra day this February :) ) Hopefully next month will be the same!

A couple of months ago my friend and I went to a restaurant we had heard about in the Central West End, called Green Bean. The place had a unique and up-tempo vibe, and the menu- any kind of salad imaginable- was delicious and nutritious. They also are a very green environmentally friendly business! I decided I wanted to make a video profiling the up-and- coming restaurant.. and so I did!

Here is the link, enjoy!
